Water is the key element in the ‘Canal town’ (Kanalby) situated in the old industrial and port areas of Sluseholmen. The area consists of eight residential ‘islands’ where town houses of different sizes stand side by side and form continuous thoroughfares. The atmosphere alternates between intimate canal quarters and areas built on a larger scale with views over the surrounding port. In many places, the buildings sit right next to the canal, and bridges, quays and ‘water stairs’ invite people to get close to the water and dip their toes in.
Arkitema is responsible for the overall planning together with the Dutch architect Sjoerd Soeters. Arkitema also developed the carcases and the overall scheme for proportions, materials and colours. These ground rules guided the many architects who designed the facades. The individual buildings display great variety, just like Copenhagen town houses from around 1900. This produces vibrant and imaginative blocks which are unique among Danish residential developments.
