As the UK progresses towards its net-zero goals, greater amounts of wind energy are being installed and connected to the electrical grid.
Coire Glas, located in the Scottish Highlands, will be the first pumped hydro storage scheme installed in the UK for more than three decades, and the 90-metre-high dam will become the UK’s largest.
The 1500 MW scheme will act as a battery for wind energy, capable of providing electricity to the grid promptly when needed, and for long periods of time. To combat periods of intermittent offshore wind output, pumped hydro storage is seen as an increasingly necessary solution.
The Coire Glas pumped hydro scheme will provide the UK with the flexibility needed to bring more offshore wind into the national energy supply and support the country’s net zero goals.
