The landfill closure significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions from the former dump, and paves the way for environmentally acceptable management of the waste at the site. The project also serves as a demonstration project for many other communities in Central Java where solid waste problems are staggering.
Works include: closure of the dump site, regulation of the waste surface, covering with impermeable membrane, installation of a gas collection system, gas flare, and motor/generator system to convert gas to electricity. Production capacity is 800 KW and the power will be fed into the national grid.
The project is part of COWI’s role to assist the Danish Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, with the implementation of environmentally friendly and sustainable energy pilot projects in Central Java.
