Climate change increases the risk of cloudbursts and rising sea levels. As a result, one of the huge future societal challenges is to protect cities against increasing volumes of stormwater and flooding.
Middelfart Municipality has chosen to set an example by the Climate City project. In addition to protecting Middelfart against flooding, the project aims to create recreational, social and economic additional value by combining climate adaptation measures with community experiences and strengthened qualities in the cityscape. Therefore, the CIimate City includes lush rain gardens; stringent canals intersecting the landscape; and a simple, trough-shaped street profile in the Medieval district that leads the water directly to the Little Belt.
The vision behind the Climate City has already received vast attention and been a source of inspiration in Denmark and abroad. In 2018, the Climate City won best climate-adaptation project in Denmark.
