The Cebu-Cordova Expressway will link Cebu, the second largest city in the Philippines, with Cordova on Mactan Island. 40,000 vehicles are expected to use the new 8.5km long road daily, cutting the travel time between Mactan and Cebu International Airport by 40 minutes, and relieving congestion on the existing inter-island crossings.
The Expressway crosses a sensitive ecosystem of mangrove forests, which play an important role in storm surge protection. To ensure these forests are protected, the developer, Cebu Cordova Link Expressway Corporation (CCLEC), have built a Mangrove Propagation and Information Center, to promote ecotourism in the area.
Fishing is an important livelihood for the people of Cebu and Cordova. The CCLEC have designed clearances and channels into the structure to allow boats easy access to the fishing grounds. Cebu is also home to the country’s busiest port, and the bridge has been designed to cause no disruption to shipping routes through the Mactan channel.
